Bowen, Emanuel


Bowen was engraver to George II and Louis XV of France. The map is in two parts - the upper one shows the western coast of North Africa, the lower shows the eastern part. Each has its own decorated cartouche. The different countries are clearly delineated and described.

In the mid-eighteenth century, French mapmaking was at its peak. Brion de la Tour was one of its most prolific cartographers. This beautiful decorated little map of Africa north of the equator, elegantly surrounded by an ornate engraved uncoloured frame, is a fine example of the period.
