A beautiful sea chart of part of the Indian Ocean, north west coast of Madagascar, and islands to the east including Maurtitius. Robert Dudley’s principal work was the Dell Arcano del Mare which was first published in Florence in 1646, the second edition was in 1661. It was the first sea atlas in which every chart was based on Mercator’s Projection, the first to show prevailing winds and currents in the main harbours and anchorages, and the first to give magnetic declination. It is also the first sea atlas by an Englishman and is extremely rare
