This map is a reduced version of the one Merian engraved for Johann Ludwig Gottfried in 1631. It is one of many derivative maps of the Jodocus Hondius, 1618. One noticeable difference is the altered perspective of the inset map of Greenland. Matthew Merian was not only a publisher, but an accomplished engraver in his own right. Born in Basel, Switzerland, he spent most of his life in Frankfurt where he met and married Theodore de Bry’s daughter. The map is also found in later editions. Ref.
