Chart of mouth of the River Tyne with soundings up river to Newcastle. North to the left of map.There are two inset maps- along left edge there is an inset of the coast south to the Wear Estuary and at top right the coast north to Blyth Harbour is shown. Right of centre there is a decorated cartouche dedicated to the Master and Gentlemen Brethren of Trinity House. Captain Greenvile Collins was an outstanding naval officer who became ‘Hydrographer to the King’ before the Coasting Pilot was published. The Coasting Pilot was the result of the first systematic survey of British coastal waters. It took eight years to complete. The charts are notable for both their accuracy and their charm
