Impressive panorama of Rome showing every street and important building within the city walls. North to the left. The River Tiber flows across from left to right, the Vatican at lower left, the Coliseum to right of centre. The plan was originally published by Merian in his Topographia, and later incorporated into Gottfried’s Archontoligica. Born in Basel, Switzerland, Merian spent most of his life in Frankfurt where he met and married Theodore de Bry’s daughter.

Trimmed to edge of plate at left margin. In very good condition.
