This birds eye view of the city of Gloucester is a wonderful example of Johannes Kip's work. The city streets and buildings accurately depicted, with the cathedral at its heart. There are boats on the river Severn, and the countryside extends into the distance beyond the city. It was originally produced for the remarkable Britannia Illustrata before being published in Robert Atkyns’ The Ancient & Present State of Gloucestershire. A talented draughtsman & engraver, Johannes Kip (1653-1722) was a Dutchman who settled in England at the end of the 17th century.
