A Proof Before Title of Landseer’s painting of a Scottish family inside their home. The father has returned from hunting with his dogs, resting his feet on his prey - a deer, a couple of rabbits, and a grouse. He is fed by his daughter, whilst his wife tends a fire in the background. Edwin Landseer’s Scottish Highland scenes were very popular and he became one of Queen Victoria’s favourites. Plates lose the detail of the shading after much use, but this proof print has a beautifully fresh, velvety finish, vividly depicting the light of the fire, the dark of the cottage, and its human and animal subjects.
India proof laid down on thicker paper with very ample margins. Darkened on margins, but the plate is very crisp and clear. Excellent condition.
