This superb engraving shows a section from Carracci’s famous designs for the Galerie Farnese in Rome. Hyacinthus and Apolline are in the top panel. Below, in the main panel, the cyclops, Polyphemus woos the sea nymph Galatea by playing the pan pipes. Galatea astride a sea monster with attendants pretends to be disinterested. The panels are flanked by various figures and putti. The affair between Polyphemus and Galatea was the subject of two poems by Theocritus, the Sicilian Greek poet.
A crisp clean impression. Fine condition.
