Clear and accurate map of the Americas in the early nineteenth century. The coastline is accurately depicted apart from the unexplored north-west passage. The map is coloured by country, which shows the United States (green) ending at the Mississipi, and the territory to the west (yellow) merging with Mexico in the south, and Canada (red) in the north. John Cary was considered 'the most representative, able and prolific of English cartographers'. Tooley says, 'As an engraver he was elegant and exact with fine clear lettering and great delicacy of touch'. When the Ordnance Survey began accurately mapping the UK, they used John Cary's style as the basis for their work.
Light offset of title oval. Very good condition.
