This map is a reduced version of Blaeu’s 1635 map of the same title, with some noteable differences. Merian has place his cartouche at lower left allowing more detail on the Chinese mainland and there are no rhumb lines for example, but the area covered and the level of detail is the same Matthew Merian was born in Basel, Switzerland, but spent most of his life in Frankfurt where he met and married Theodore de Bry’s daughter.
