Beautiful map of Japan, showing its provinces. The northern island, Hokkaido is not shown - it was not yet known, although there is a land mass shown where it should be, labelled ‘Kamchatka’. Attractive decorative cartouche at upper left. Emmanuel Bowen was one of the leading English mapmakers of the eighteenth-century, and was unusual in that he was cartographer to both the French and English Royal Courts.

Fine condition. Good margins. The second state with ‘42’ in the lower left corner.
