A very attractive early map of South East Asia with decorative border, title at lower left. The coastlines are recognisable but approximate. The map stretches from ‘Persia’ in the north west to ‘New Guinea’ in the south-east. Part of the west coast of North America is shown at top right, showing the lack of knowledge of the size of the Pacific at the time. Matthaus Quad was a German cartographer based in Cologne, which, at the time was the centre for German cartography. This map is from his Fascilus Geographicus. It was printed by Johannes Bussemacher.
Very good condition. Wide margins. A little show-through of text from verso. Five place names are underlined in brown.
