Rhumb lines crisscross the map, depth soundings. compass point. The Neptune Francois was ‘a seminal work in the development of sea atlases.’ (ref: British Library Catalogue.) It was compiled in co-operation with Cassini. Mortier published a counterfeit version in Amsterdam, and half a century later most of the plates were used again in a revised version published by Bellin in 1753
