This beautiful engraving shows an exploration at the entrance to an unexcavated building. Three men with a flaming torch descend into the dark interior while five guards, with guns and a flute idly stand guard outside. Louis-François Cassas was one of the best French printmakers of the eighteenth century. His Voyage Pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phoenicie, de la Palestine, et de la Basse-Egypte is perhaps the finest eighteenth century illustrated book on the Middle East. This superb print is from the first edition, published in parts on large sheets.
Large paper copy. Fine condition.
