Magnificent engraving of Palmyra. In the foreground, opposite the Temple of the Sun, stand 16 columns, whilst behind, a procession of soldiers on foot and camelback cross a barren landscape of desert and spectacular Roman ruins. Louis-François Cassas’ Voyage Pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phoenicie, de la Palestine, et de la Basse-Egypte is perhaps the finest eighteenth century illustrated book on the Middle East. This superb print is from the first edition, published in parts on large sheets.
Large paper copy. Fine condition.
