Magnificent engraving of the interior of the ruins of the Temple of Neptune, with an Arab soldier sitting on a carved stone slab in the foreground. Louis-François Cassas was one of the best French printmakers of the eighteenth century. His Voyage Pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phoenicie, de la Palestine, et de la Basse-Egypte is perhaps the finest eighteenth century illustrated book on the Middle East. This superb print is from the first edition, published in parts on large sheets.
