The four plates in this set depict four stages of the election of a country MP. Plate 1, An Election Entertainment’, shows a drunken pre-election party. Plate 2, ‘Canvassing for votes’, shows canvassing in the street. Plate 3,’ The Polling’, shows chaotic scenes at the poll, and plate 4, ‘Chairing the Member’, shows a victory procession through the street. Hogarth regularly used events of his time to produce series of prints charting a story. His combination of artistic skill, political allegory and caustic social comment, simultaneously produced high art and laid the ground for political cartoonists like Gillray. The price is for the set of four prints.
Very good condition. Crisp and clean. Narrow margins. The titles of the prints along lower edge have been cropped.
