Spectacular print of Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon. Mary was the sister of Henry VIII and Charles Barndon was his best friend. They married in secret, and Brandon’s friendship to the monarch was sorely tested. They were the grandparents to the unfortunate ‘Queen for nine days’ Lady Jane Grey. The surround to the portrait is richly ornamented with symbols of their relationship, from the crown and sceptre on her aside to the lance on his and the fragment of words on a ribbon, ‘Cloth of Gold do not despise, tho’ thou be matched with Cloth of frieze.’ The print is based on a painting, then in the possession of John Lord Carteret, Earl of Granville
