Magnificent map of Africa, more decorative than accurate. The coastline is fairly detailed and accurately depicted, the interior is a little fanciful. ‘... poor geographically’, says Tooley in his Guide to Maps of Africa, p.51, ‘with an extraordinary delineation of the Nile which is partly based on Ptolemy (rising in two large lakes, Zaire and Zaflan), and partly on the 16th century discovery of the source of the Nile by the Portuguese Paez’. Large decorative title cartouche flanked by Africans, and animals, cherubs above.
Fine condition. Mounted size: 80 x 72cm.
