Beautiful engraving of Henry Stuart Darnley’s parents and son, in front of his tomb, praying. The son, James, became James the Ist of England, James VIth of Scotland. At lower left is an inset picture of the Battle of Carberry Hill. Title and text in Latin along lower edge. Engraved from a painting. In the days before photography, engravings, such as this magnificent example, were how visual historical records were kept. George Vertue, was employed by the Society of Antiquaries for this task, and made many engravings from paintings, plans and maps.
Fine condition. Crisp and clean, good margins.
