A beautiful map of Cumberland and Westmorland, showing the towns, rivers, hills, lakes, parks and forests of this area (all now part of the present-day county of Cumbria). A decorative title cartouche in the top left shows mermaids and cherubs. In the bottom left corner the map scale is presented in a beautiful rural cartouche crowned with a shield. In the top right corner are the coats of arms of the Earls of Carlisle: Marcatus, E., Ran Meschems, Andrew Harkley, plus a fourth blank one. In the bottom right corner two cherubs support a shield with a white cross on a red background, above three further coats of arms (of John D. of Bedford, John D. of Somerset and John de Foix). To the left of the map, the Irish Sea is criss-crossed with rhumb lines and contains two compasses as well as two elegant sailing ships.
