A fine chart of the Cook Straits dividing New Zealand's North and South Islands showing Admiralty Bay, Queen Charlotte's Sound, Cloudy Bay, Cape Palliser and detailed coastal topography. The North and South Islands are named “Partie De Tavai Poe Na Mmoo”, and “Partie D'Eahe I No Mauwe”. With detailed depth soundings around the inlets and islets of South Island. On the other side of the Straits, the entrance to Wellington harbour is left blank. Discovered by Capt. James Cook on his first voyage to the Pacific in 1768-1771. From the French Edition of John Hawkesworth's “Account of the Voyages Undertaken....for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere.” 1773. Engraved in Paris by Robert Benard in 1774.
Good condition, some showthrough. Long brown mark to left of centrefold, perhaps from hingeguard.
