A beautiful pair of circular maps showing the western and eastern hemispheres. The western hemisphere shows the Americas and the Pacific ocean. The eastern hemisphere shows Africa, Europe and Asia, as well as the outline of Australasia, with New Zealand and Australia as one land mass. With decorative title cartouche topped with garland of flowers and with gargoyle head between the two hemispheres. There is some confusion over the Christian name of this French geographer and cartographer who worked in Paris from about 1746. Some believe his first name to have been Jean, others Robert - as was his habit, this map bears the inscription ‘Le Sieur Janvier’.
Good condition - browning and age spotting mainly confined to margins. Good, wide margins.
