A beautiful view of the Puerto de Pasages in northern Spain. Previously called Port Oiarso, it has been called Puerto Pasages since 1491, when the Catholic Monarchs (Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand the II of Aragon) began calling it Pasage.Although relatively small in scale it is an important Port of Spain which plays a significant economic role for the Basque Country. Indeed, because of its strategic geographical position, just 20 kilometres from the border of France, this fully protected natural bay was a source of dispute within the neighbouring areas wishing to exploit the lucrative natural resources. It was a particularly significant fishing port during the decades of the 60s and 70s, and remains to this day a major economic centre, with important commercial and fishing docks.
Good condition. Framed in hand made rosewood frame with gilt slip. Framed size 76 x 57 cm.
