Angelica Kauffman was a highly successful and prolific Swiss painter. She is best known for the numerous engravings from her designs by Bartolozzi, such as the present pair. These prints were very popular all over Europe and apparently refer to the escapades of the goddess Artemis, the chaste goddess of hunting, and her sacred hind, the Cerynian Hind (Cerynitis). In the first engraving, Artemis is seen embracing Cerynitis in a wooded landscape. The second probably alludes to the moment when Heracles gives back the sacred hind to Artemis. Heracles had captured the hind and delivered it to his patron- Eurystheus- as one of his Twelve Labours, which had to carry out in order to expiate from the slaughtering of his own children.Priced as a pair £1,200.
Fine condition. Framed in beautiful antique rosewood frames, framed size 46.7 x 46.7. cm
