Duhamel du Monceau was one of the outstanding botanists and horticulturists of the 18th century. Redouté and his pupil Bessa were to draw all the images for this great work. Both artists studied under Gerald von Spaendonck, the great flower painter of France's Le Jardin du Roi. To produce the plates a team of 29 engravers were employed.
