These engravings by Aquila are after Annibale Carracci’s wall frescoes in the Gallery in Palazzo Farnese in Rome, commissioned by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese, begun in 1597. This superb engraving shows sections from Carracci’s famous designs for the Galerie Farnese in Rome. The scene depicts the terrified Andromeda fastened to the rock on the shore of the Phoenician kingdom. On the right hand side King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia stand cowering at the sea shore at their daughter’s fate however, they are unaware of Perseus’ arrival. On the left hand side Perseus hovers above the terrible sea-monster Ceto holding in his hand the head of the gorgon whom he uses to slay the monster and free Andromeda.
