Hand coloured engraving representing the harbour of Falmouth, which is the third deepest natural harbour in the world and it is famous for being the start or finish point of many round-the-world voyages. With the harbour and calm sea in the background, the print also depicts some people sitting on the hill in the foreground. They might be watching the horizon in search for save return of some sailors. Edward Duncan (1803 - 1882) started his career as an engraver. He began to exhibit in 1830 and became a member of the New Society of Painters in Watercoulours in 1834. Later he was elected an Associate of the Old Society of Printers in Watercolours. He is best known for the coastal scenes. Duncan’s good drawing skills are said to be due to his training as an engraver.
