Beautiful engraving representing the harbour of Portland, Dorset, known as the jewel of the Jurassic Coast. There are ladies with children depicted sitting on the cliff in the foreground and calm sea with plenty of ships in the background. Edward Duncan (1803 - 1882) started his career as an engraver. He began to exhibit in 1830 and became a member of the New Society of Painters in Watercoulours in 1834. Later he was elected an Associate of the Old Society of Printers in Watercolours. He is best known for the coastal scenes. Duncan’s good drawing skills are said to be due to his training as an engraver.
Very good condition
