Taste in High Life is based upon a 1742 painting by William Hogarth. In the early 1800's Boydell acquired Hogarth's original engraved plates and printed a posthumous edition from them. He also commissioned artists to engrave several further plates after Hogarth's most famous paintings.Taste in High Life is a brilliant attack upon the fashions and decorations of the day. Very little is known of Samuel Phillips. Engravings from his hand were mostly commissioned by London's leading publisher, John (1719-1804) and Josiah Boydell. As well as Hogarth's, Taste in High Life, Phillips engraved such large plates as The Birth of Shakespeare, after Westall, and The Guardian Angel, after Maria Cosway, both published by Boydell.
Good condition.
