'I now offer to the public a short essay, accompanied with two explanatory prints, in which I shall endeavour to shew what the principles are in nature, by which we are directed to call the forms of some bodies beautiful, others ugly'.This is the opening sentence on William Hogarth's essay on beauty, for which Hogarth engraved these two beautiful plates. Plate 1 depicts a sculptor’s yard filled with many statues and anatomical figures, around the borders of both plates are numerous figures, shapes, lines, faces and decorations. Plate 2 shows a wild dancing party in a grand hall. Around the borders of both plates are numerous figures, shapes, lines, faces and decorations. Price is for the pair of prints.
