Boldly engraved chart of the polar region to 50° N. shows the latest discoveries and routes of numerous explorers during their attempts to find a Northwest and Northeast Passage, including James, Hudson and Barentz. Baffin and Hudson Bays are shown in a rather narrow configuration. Novaya Zemlya is shown correctly on the map as an island, but shown as a peninsula in a small inset in the right bottom corner, with a disclaimer by Moll: “A Map of NOVA ZEMBLA and WAYGATS, as Discovered by ye Czar of Moscovy, whereby it appears not an Island but joyned wth ye Continent and that ye Mare Glaciale is not a Sea but a fresh-water Bay: but this Draught having no Latitude nor Scale, we dare not fully depend upon ...” The only note on the Pacific coast is that of the Str.of Annian. A second inset at the top shows a north polar projection with the island of California, and notes regarding the destinations of explorers who were searching for a northern passage to Asia:“The letter A in this Draught is ye place which all Adventurers aimed to come at in order to make the N.West Passage and B is that for the N.East Passage.”
Very good condition; remargined, repair to the centre fold, slight browning to the top centrefold.
