George Vivian (1798-1873), draughtsman and painter from London, travelled through Spain and Portugal making sketches of many old buildings and towns. On his return Vivian made the drawings famous publishing a collection of lithographs under the title "Scenery of Portugal & Spain". The work consists of 33 magnificent drawings on stone by L. Haghe. Vivian selected the most interesting and picturesque scenes for the lithographs, delivering a vivid picture of the countries in the early nineteenth century. Vivian notes: ‘Gabia la Grande, is situated 4 or 5 miles from Granada on the Alhama Road. A Calvary of Crosses is raised in front of the little Church of S. M. de la Cabeza on an elevated spot which commands a view of the Sierra de Elvira, and that part of the Valley of Granada, where the Soto di Roma lies. This was formerly one of the most valuable domains of the Crown, and is now the property of the Duke of Wellington.’
