A beautiful sea chart of the south coast of Portugal and Spain with the Strait of Gibraltar embellished with ships and sea monsters. Robert Dudley was an English sailor and engineer, whose principal work was Dell Arcano del Mare ("Concerning the secrets of the sea"), which is considered one of the greatest atlases of the world and one of the most complex ever produced. It is the first sea-atlas of the whole world; the first sea atlas in which every chart was based on Mercator's projection, the first to show prevailing winds and currents in the main harbours and anchorages, and the first to give magnetic declination. It is also the first sea atlas by an Englishman and is extremely rare. It was first published in Florence in 1646-47 and this magnificent map comes from the first edition.

Fine condition, a clear, crisp impression; wide margins.
