An attractive mid eighteenth century map of Scotland, decorated with a figurative title cartouche. Interspersed among the place names are some interesting notes and comments - “Marr’s Bank discovered by a Celebrated Navigator of that name. Plenty of Cod Fish and Ling caught all about this Bank”, “The Dutch begin their Herring fishery about these Islands the 24 June and leave off in August or September two Thousand Vessels have been fishing in Brassa Sound (where they are commonly most plentiful) in one Summer” etc.Emmanuel Bowen was one of the leading English mapmakers of the eighteenth-century, and was unusual in that he was cartographer to both the French and English Royal Courts.
Fine condition; wide margins.
